Colectiva

Genesis 19:39

Genesis 19:39 is a multidisciplinary collective formed in 2024 by Saskatchewan international artists Lautaro Reyes and Alejandro Romero. Through a social justice lens, the collective focuses on art installations and public performances to reinterpret, reimagine, and recreate history, reclaiming safer spaces to spark conversations about contemporary issues.

Colectiva Genesis 19:39, an innovative artist collective formed by Chilean-Canadian artist Lautaro Reyes and Puerto Rican-Canadian artist Alejandro Romero, emerges in 2024 as a transformative force in the exploration of cultural identities and social histories. Drawing inspiration from the rich cultural tapestry of Latin America, the collective reimagines, recreates, and reinterprets historical narratives, bringing them into the Canadian context through participatory installations and social interventions.

In their practice, Colectiva Genesis 19:39 pushes boundaries by engaging with public spaces—both indoors and outdoors—creating immersive environments where the audience becomes an active participant. The collective uses a multidisciplinary approach that integrates visual art, performance, sound, and tactile experiences, making the interaction multisensory. Through this, the collective amplifies the power of sensory memory, offering a visceral connection to the past while evoking feelings of belonging and resistance.

The work challenges and critiques the complexities of cultural interpretation, questioning the dominant narratives that often erase or distort marginalized histories. By engaging with these histories in a contemporary setting, Colectiva Genesis 19:39 disrupts the status quo, inviting the public to reflect on issues of social injustice, identity, and collective memory.

Through their work Reyes and Romero invite audiences to reconsider the intersections of Latin American heritage with the Canadian landscape, offering a platform for conversations that transcend borders and time. It is a call for remembrance, resilience, and transformation, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of the ongoing struggles for justice and recognition.

Priscila Cabildo, an emerging artist, joined the collective as a guest artist for the current project.

Guest Artist

Priscila Cabildo

Priscila Cabildo, was born in Mexico City many moons ago, she is an emerging artist currently living in the Land of Living Skies, Saskatoon. As an artist - movement and creativity are the way she likes to express herself. In the last few years her artwork is an instrument  of reconnecting with her Indigenous heritage (which was buried by European colonialism and nowadays Americanism). She wants to honor the land where she comes from, and show different ways to make meaningful and valuable connections. Connecting with her culture by the creation of contemporary art has brought her closer to her homeland and developed a feel of belonging to something bigger than herself and to the imaginary borders between Mexico, Canada, and USA. Proud of who her indiogenous heritage, she will continue to create art and connect meaningfully with community.

Virgen Barbuda Work in progress

Humanity has built social constructs to enforce order, yet those same systems have been weaponized to control and repress what is not fully understood. Labels dictate identities—virginity as purity for women, shame for men, and hedonism for queer people. Through a communal procession, participants carry Virgen Barbuda—a symbol of defiance and reclamation—toward an altar where nature takes over. The collective journey becomes an act of resistance, stripping away imposed labels. At the altar, fire consumes these constructs, transforming them into something intrinsic to each individual. In this ritual, society’s weight dissolves, and the community witnesses liberation in its purest form.
